How SafeGunLock can keep you out of jail

In the United States, more and more parents and guardians are being prosecuted. Why? If a child fires an adult's gun accidently, or commits a crime with the weapon, the law may hold the gun owner responsible.

Sadly, school shootings are just one of many liability cases on record. Keep reading to learn about minimizing your personal liability.

The danger inside the home

Like most gun owners, you probably have that one gun that’s easily accessible to keep your loved ones safe from outside threats. But what happens when danger lurks inside your home?

The unimaginable happens. A child, elder or another vulnerable member of the household fires your gun accidentally. Or worse yet, uses it to commit a crime or self-harm.

Those kinds of tragedies have always caused unspeakable suffering in families and their communities. Loved ones have been injured or killed, communities shattered.

And now justice has also taken a turn in an unexpected way. Parents are getting arrested, charged and sentenced when a child or family member pulls the trigger. Whether it's accidental or if they commit a crime, law enforcement may go after the gun owner.

When parents are part of the firearm problem

The history of parental liabilities involving firearms in the United States goes back over ten years, with prosecutions ever-increasing since 2021. Here are some cases that stand out:

2015 Boy shoots himself with father's gun

Ed Rosas’ four-year old son figured out how to climb up a tall chest of drawers by using each drawer as “steps.” He was looking for a shirt for his father to wear at their home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He found a gun instead and shot himself in the femur.

Rosas’ ended up with a plea deal, charged with child abuse, neglect or endangerment, agreeing to a curfew, parenting classes and other conditions. Although he never went to jail, his case set a precedent for future prosecutions. Father and son now talk openly about the importance of firearm safety. [Local Las Vegas]

2021 Teen murders classmates with a Christmas gift from parents

James and Jennifer Crumbley were found guilty after their son murdered four classmates and shot seven other people at Oxford High School in Michigan. The weapon? He used a powerful Sig Sauer 9mm handgun they had gifted him for Christmas.

The Crumbleys are the first parents in the U.S. of a mass school shooter who were ever charged and convicted. The sentencing took place in 2024 after separate trials, with charges of four counts of involuntary manslaughter that carried a maximum penalty of 15 years. [NPR]

2024 Teen kills and wounds with an AR weapon he received from his father

Colin Grey’s 14-year old son killed four people and wounded nine at his Georgia high school using an AR type weapon he had bought for him. Colin was charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children. [Tallahassee Democrat]

2025 Man's son shoots his brother with an AK-47 rifle

Jarez Wilson of St. Louis County, Missouri was charged with child endangerment after one of his sons accidentally shot his brother with a loaded AK-47 rifle inside of a bag on a couch. Wilson was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child. He was given a $150,000 bond and received a warrant for his arrest shortly thereafter. [FOX 2]

One simple lock can make the difference between life and death

The above cases give us pause. We’re sure they make you think, too. All of it is preventable. Gun safety doesn't have to be that hard.

There’s one easy, affordable way to avoid being held liable if someone takes your gun and commits a crime. Or, as in the case with young children, fires accidentally. Putting your firearm in safe storage is one way. Using SafeGunLock is optimal.

With public safety in mind, we built our lock as a stronger alternative to easily breakable cable locks. The risk of harm to children and families in our communities is too great to ignore. Unfortunately, gun violence takes place in many ways and makes up the fabric of our daily lives. Think mass shootings, domestic violence, gun suicides, as well as firearm injuries and deaths.

We also created SafeGunLock for responsible gun owners like you. We know you care deeply about family while needing an easy-to-reach gun to defend life and property.

How does SafeGunLock protect your family and keep you from liability?

It’s simple. Only you know the unique unlocking combination. Only you can fire the gun. Our gun lock is practically impossible to break without breaking the gun.

There is no federal law that requires gun owners to safely and securely store their guns. Some state laws do require locking devices, especially when there are vulnerable people, such as children in the home. Safe storage laws vary state-by-state.

Locking your gun with our solid steel lock is a life-saving measure that also minimizes your risk of being held personally liable. Never let your unsecured gun get in the wrong hands.
